It is correctly said that a book is judged by its cover. When a person visiting book store, picks up a book when he gets attracted to the cover, whether it is the color combination, the subject of title or the graphics used to make the cover. The overall presentation of the book cover attracts a person to get him further interested in browsing through the book. I have many a times experienced that my visits to a local library gets me back with a book I never had an intention to buy originally, I generally get attracted to a book through a cursory glance.
The overall concept of a book cover design is a combined effect of its title, the font, the text placement, the graphics and the color combination. Any of these elements if weak can take away from the effect of the front cover.
I also have seen books which has a very attractive cover, but the inside artwork and content is totally mis-match. The cover designer must keep the text theme as a focal point while designing the front cover.
And last but not least. The title of the cover should be eye catching that can draw attention from a distance, and the overall cover should look equally attractive and readable when reduced into a thumbnail size for all the web users who browse for the books on online stores.
